NAMES Nolan Fitzgerald & Troy Benson LIVE IN Manhattan, NY OCCUPATIONS Nolan is general manager of a jewelry store; Troy is partner at an advertising agency. HOW THEY MET Online. They bonded by texting for a week about shared interests, including music and running in the city and then met for dinner and “completely hit it off.” HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED The ardent travelers got engaged in the British Virgin Islands on New Year’s Eve and then decided on a California wine country wedding. BACHELOR PARTIES Instead of parties, they organized a wine tour several days before the wedding. Nolan: “We wanted anyone who hadn’t been before to enjoy a Sonoma tour and tasting.” REHEARSAL DINNER They hosted a reception with champagne and hors d’oeuvres. Nolan: “It was nice to see everyone before the wedding and give them an advance glimpse of the venue.” WEDDING DAY WEATHER 80 degrees and sunny NUMBER OF GUESTS 70 WEDDING COLORS Steel gray, navy, and white THEME The beauty of Sonoma FLOWERS Their wedding arrangements each contained 40 white orchids—branches were incorporated to lend a masculine feel. DIY HIGHLIGHTS Because they planned from afar, DIY wasn’t a practical option, but they did save money and reduce waste by repurposing chairs, tables, and even flower arrangements. THE MENU They worked closely with the venue’s chef to develop a meal of regional wine country cuisine with an emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients. DESSERT Instead of one traditional tiered cake, they served three cakes, each with different flavors and shapes. They also presented a dessert table with colorful bite-size treats, from macarons to hand-rolled truffles. MUSIC Although neither groom is much of a dancer, they wanted the option for their guests and hired a “dance band with a vintage twist.” They played sophisticated, quieter tunes during dinner. Nolan: “Then they turned it up after the meal with lively swing music.” IF THEY COULD HAVE SPENT THEIR MONEY DIFFERENTLY They wouldn’t have—they were thrilled that they managed to keep within budget. FAVORITE DETAIL Their venue, the Kenwood Inn. Nolan: “It felt like a magical garden floating on a cloud. I couldn’t imagine a more stunning space.” UNEXPECTED EVENT The speeches from Nolan’s father and Troy’s stepfather. Nolan: “They were completely different from one another, but the warm tone of love and acceptance was so touching.” ADVICE FOR OTHERS A wedding planner is worth every penny. Also, pick your vendors early but save specific decisions about style for later. “We started planning a year ahead and had to start over six months later, as our tastes changed. THE DAY IN THREE WORDS Magical, timeless, warm

It felt like a magical garden floating on a cloud. I couldn’t imagine a more stunning space. –Nolan
