Weddings of Our Own: Nardos & Katy

NAMES Nardos Bellete & Katharine Palfrey.
LIVE IN Dallas, Texas.
OCCUPATIONS Nardos is a psychologist currently completing her neuropsychology fellowship training; Katy is executive director of a conservation-focused nonprofit.
HOW THEY MET On OkCupid when they lived in Los Angeles. Nardos was attending Pepperdine University and Katy was on summer break from her MBA program in Boston. “After hours of messaging and phone conversations prior to our first date,” says Nardos, “we moved up our date because we couldn’t wait to meet each other.” They convened at Palomino in Westwood and spent another three hours strolling around UCLA campus.
HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED After a year and a half of dating long distance (with Nardos now working in a hospital in Syracuse and Katy having accepted an amazing job in Dallas), Katy surprised Nardos, appearing at her doorstep, down on one knee. Nardos accepted, and the couple decided right away to plan on a destination wedding in California. Katy: “We met in California, and we both love the state. Witnessing the advent of marriage equality after we fought against Prop 8 was an amazing experience.”
WEDDING-DAY WEATHER Partly sunny, slightly breezy, 72 degrees—just perfect.
NUMBER OF GUESTS 5 (the two brides, the officiant, the wedding planner, and the photographer). Katy: “It was a true elopement.”
WEDDING COLORS Purple, pink, and green.
FLOWERS Bouquets of lavender and lilac.
THE MENU The small wedding party enjoyed a three-course meal with wine pairings at the Farmhouse Inn’s Michelin Star restaurant. Katy: “The staff was very knowledgeable, and the food was exceptional.”
DESSERT An artisan single-tier cake with almond buttercream and lavender and green accents.
IF THEY HAD TO DO IT OVER They might have spent less on beauty treatments in order to spend more on traveling. They also would have purchased their flights sooner. Katy: “We completely forgot to book them until the day before we were supposed to leave for the wedding.”
FAVORITE DETAIL As Nardos and Katy posed for photos after the ceremony, they were approached by an older lesbian couple celebrating their own 30th anniversary that very same weekend. Katy: “It was a beautiful moment.”
UNIQUE ELEMENTS OF THE DAY The couple knew they wanted to elope at the Farmhouse Inn as soon as they discovered it. Katy: “After contacting them regarding their elopement packages, their quick and delighted responses let us know they were perfect for us. They booked our officiant, photographer, cake, bouquets, upgraded suites, couple’s massage, and special reception dinner in the restaurant. Once we got there, we were able to choose our ceremony location from anywhere on the property.”
UNEXPECTED EVENT Their wedding planner and photographer took them to a nearby vineyard for an outdoor photoshoot. “It gave us amazing photos,” says Katy, “and was a lot of fun.”
ADVICE FOR OTHERS Make a checklist—and check it often.
